What is the Full Form of pH in Chemistry
Wondering What is the Full Form of pH in chemistry or medical?
- The full form of pH in chemistry is the Potential of Hydrogen.
Who invented the pH scale?
Søren Peder Lauritz Sørensen, a Danish chemist at Carlsberg Laboratory in 1909 invented the pH scale.
What is pH
It represents the concentration of hydrogen ion present in a solution.
Definition of pH
It is a figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale on which 7 is neutral, lower values are more acid and higher values more alkaline.
The mathematical definition of pH
The pH is equal to −log10 c, where c is the hydrogen ion concentration in moles per liter. Using the mathematical formula and its modifications one can easily calculate the pH of the acidic or basic solution.

pH examples
- pH of pure water form is 7 hence it is neutral
- pH of groundwater is in the range 6.5 to 8, hence is it basic or alkaline
- pH of blood is in the range 7.35 to 7.45 hence it is slightly basic or alkaline
- Aqueous solutions
- pH of a 0.01 M benzoic acid solution is 3.11, hence it is an acidic solution
- pH of a 1 M NaCl aqueous solutions 14, as the pH is greater it is strong basic or strong alkaline solution.
How is pH measured?
There are two simple methods to measure the pH of any given solution or substance.
- The most common method used in schools and colleges is through litmus paper test.
- If blue litmus paper, when dipped in the solution, turns red then the solution is acidic.
- If red litmus paper, when dipped in the solution, turn blue then the solution is basic.
But from this blue and red litmus paper, one cannot know the pH value. Therefore to know the pH value of the solution, Universal pH paper (yellow in color) is used which when dipped in the solution changes its color from dark red to dark violate. Then one can easily compare the color intensity with pH scale and pH value of the solution.
- The second method is the measurement of pH by an instrument called pH meter.
- It is a scientific instrument that directly shows the pH value between 0 to 14.
