HCl Chemical Name
The HCl chemical name in chemistry is hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is also known as muriatic acid.
Note, when HCl is in the gas form it is called hydrogen chloride and is denoted by HCl(g) where (g) stands for the gaseous state. If the HCl gas is dissolved in water then it is called Hydrochloric acid and it is denoted by HCl(aq), where aq means the aqueous solution
- HCl is a gas at room temperature
- It has a pungent smell
- HCl is an inorganic acid
- The gas is highly corrosive being a strong acid
- HCl gas is soluble in water. It dissolves in water to form a colorless transparent solution. HCL dissociates in water to form hydrogen and chloride ions
- Hydrochloric acid molar mass (molecular weight) is 36.458 g/mol
- Hydrochloric acid density ( 32% HCl ) is 1.18 g/ml at 35 degrees
Hydrochloric acid Uses
- Regulate the pH of the solutions
- Used in the synthesis of inorganic compounds eg. FeCl3, CaCl2
- Used in the synthesis of polyvinyl chloride, ascorbic acid, and pharmaceutical products
Frequently asked questions
- HCl lewis acid or base?
It is Lewis acid
- Is HCl a Bronsted acid or base ?
HCl(g) is a proton donor and is, therefore, Broinsted-Lowry acid
